Why one team across all of it

The expensive failures in product development rarely happen inside a discipline. They happen at the boundaries: the firmware team and the app team each implementing half of an under-specified protocol, the layout arriving without the thermal constraint the electronics engineer assumed, the cloud schema that cannot represent what the device actually sends.

Every one of those is a communication failure between suppliers who each did their own part correctly. Holding the whole stack removes the boundary rather than managing it, which is a duller advantage than it sounds and the one that most affects whether a date holds.

It also means the person telling you a requirement is expensive understands what it costs on every layer, not just theirs.
